A reason why the concept of hell as presented in many stories doesn’t feel quite right to me:
Shouldn’t you be a good person because you have respect for other people, rather than because you’re afraid of burning in eternal damnation? All those stories where people get a glimpse of what’s in store for them if they don’t change their ways… so they change and go to heaven instead. But they change due to fear, and they really don’t learn anything at all. They change because they’d rather not burn. Does motive have nothing to do with it?
