While spadoink and I sat on a patio drinking fruity drinks this afternoon we watched a line grow across the street from us. We couldn’t figure out from the crowd lining up exactly what the concert was supposed to be – a mix of middle-aged guys, six year old girls, and a whole bunch of asian teenagers. At one point Spad commented that it might be some asian pop group.
As it turns out, that’s exactly what it was – Puffy AmiYumi, an asian teen pop duo. I have actually seen two of their videos, on some music video show they play on CITY TV Sunday Mornings. I remember not being able to change the channel, the songs were just too painfully catchy.
To quote the bio on their website, Japanese Duo Puffy AmiYumi are more than just a chart topping group… much much more. They are, quite simply, a cultural phenomenon. Also, further down the bio is a quote from a critic from LA Weekly, “Puffy are a contemporary female version of the Monkees with the popularity of NSync and the homage/theft approach of ’90s pop-recombinant cult heroes the Pooh Sticks.”
We contemplated the creepiness of the older guys hanging out with the teen asian girls, but after a while I just didn’t want to think about it anymore. Just creepy.
